Project Overview

Designing tangible interfaces such as PrivacyCube and PriviFy to help households understand and manage how smart-home devices handle their data.

The balance between protecting user privacy while providing usable IoT experiences is a key challenge for smart-home product designers. Traditional notification models assume the presence of screens; in IoT, screens are rare or very small. We explore how non-technical occupants can understand what data is collected about the spaces they inhabit and how to express their privacy preferences.

PrivacyCube tangible interface

This project focuses on tangible interfaces—PrivacyCube and the PriviFy toolkit—that act as enhanced privacy notices. They visualise how smart-home devices manage data and help people make informed decisions. We review notification methods, design and prototype tangible devices, and evaluate how these artefacts affect privacy awareness in shared domestic environments.
