Layered Framework Towards Resilient Smart Buildings

Making Smart Buildings More Resilient using a Secondary Internet of Things Sensing Infrastructure

We increasingly rely on Internet of Things (IoT) devices in our daily lives. Smart devices are being deployed everywhere, ranging from smart cities to smart homes. IoT devices are expected to make our lives easier while they allow us to consume resource much more efficiently (e.g., a smart lighting system would help to reduce the overall energy consumption of smart homes). Despite the advantages the IoT devices bring to the smart home domain, they also create substantial risks. Connected devices increase the attack surface significantly. On the other hand, cyber-attacks are becoming increasingly sophisticated and coordinated and make it difficult for traditional attack detection techniques (e.g., Network Traffic Analysis) to detect these attacks.

Our project proposes a resilient multi-layer framework to detect cyber-physical attacks in different layers where each layer has a different set of capabilities. Each layer capable of detecting a certain type of attack. We hypothesise that the independent layered approach could detect cyber stacks better (especially so sophisticated and coordinated) than traditional approaches. Each layer will analyse different types of data generated within smart homes to detect any anomaly activity. For example, the framework consists of layers focus on detecting anomalies by observing anomalies in environmental parameters, anomalies in activity sequences, anomalies in data packets and communication patterns, anomalies in energy consumption, etc.

Our primary objective is to develop a multi-layer framework that able to detect anomalies in smart homes. Our project intends to enhance smart homes resilience. This project composed of several objectives:
